WINTERSTEIGER AROUND YOU

In industry and trade, WINTERSTEIGER is known for its machinery and systems. However, many products that are produced on our machines are also used by you! In our series "WINTERSTEIGER AROUND YOU", we show where these products are found in everyday life and what role WINTERSTEIGER plays in them.

➡️ Episode 2: Bread and pastries

The breakfast roll is one of those things that no one thinks of the machinery and plant engineering company WINTERSTEIGER. However, the SEEDMECH Division, with its equipment for seed research, makes an important contribution: Before we can enjoy the fresh pastry, the cereal that is grown in agriculture must first be bred and approved. On average, it takes 8 to 12 years for a crop type to be fully developed. In order for a crop type to be approved as seed, it must perform significantly better than the existing crop type in certain characteristics such as weight, volume, protein content, etc.

Why do we constantly need better crop types?

There are about 5 billion hectares of agricultural land worldwide. However, climate change, construction and soil erosion are causing this land to dwindle, climate changes such as drought are altering conditions and new pests are emerging. Therefore, seeds must be constantly adapted and improved to site conditions through research and breeding.

WINTERSTEIGER supplies the machines to do this: from plot drills to plot combines and laboratory equipment. WINTERSTEIGER machines cover the entire cycle in seed breeding and make an important contribution to ensuring that the world's population is fed. Around 40 % of all field research equipment worldwide are produced by WINTERSTEIGER and WINTERSTEIGER has been involved in the breeding of over 50 % of all crop types over the last 68 years.
