Optimal base structure and precise edge tuning are an important success factor in racing. These are precisely tuned depending on the discipline, snow conditions, ski type and racer.


Why do we need structure in the base? 

The base structure reduces friction between the snow and the running surface. Without structure, the ski would "stick" to the snow. In cold, crystalline snow, the running surface should be as smooth as possible (fine structure) to create as few friction points as possible. In wet snow, a textured running surface is better. Air spaces between the tread and the snow prevent the "suction effect". So depending on the snow conditions and temperature, there is a suitable base structure and in ski racing the ski is often tuned before the race.  


Why different edge angles? 

The sharper the ski edge, i.e. the more acute the edge angle, the more aggressive and sporty the ski, in racing even 0.5° at the bottom edge and 87° degrees at the side edge. At 1° on the bottom edge and 88° on the side edge, it is more turn-friendly and forgiving. Freshly sharpened edges are especially important on hard, icy slopes! After several days of skiing, a burr forms on the edge and this prevents controlled steering of the skis because the edges no longer grip: similar to when you cut tomatoes with a dull knife!
