Beyond Wood: HEMA saws more than just wood!

WINTERSTEIGER AG took a controlling interest in Heermann Maschinenbau GmbH, based in Frickenhausen near Stuttgart, Germany, on January 1, 2022. HEMA develops, produces, and sells band saws for precision cuts in lightweight materials, such as for the aerospace and wind power industries. Machines for processing construction and insulation materials also play an important role.
These technologically sophisticated solutions perfectly complement the WINTERSTEIGER product portfolio of the Division Woodtech with thin-cutting band saw machines, saw blades, and large production plants. HEMA makes the "World of Woodtech" even richer, with other materials coming to the fore alongside wood, including lightweight foam, aramid honeycomb, construction and insulating materials, and technical plastics. A still extremely young market is the manufacture of production plants for machining glass fiber-reinforced insulating materials, which are installed in liquid gas tanks. These machines are primarily sold to customers in China, where the second major project is currently underway.
From partner to subsidiary
Before the merger, WINTERSTEIGER and HEMA had enjoyed a partnership stretching back over many years: WINTERSTEIGER had been the saw band supplier for the HEMA machines in Frickenhausen. In 2022 it was time for the family company to pursue growth more aggressively on the global stage. As part of the WINTERSTEIGER Group, the company enjoys access to potential new markets in which WINTERSTEIGER already has a mature sales and service network, such as the USA. In turn we can use the sophisticated saw technology and expertise of our colleagues at HEMA for our own saw machines and markets for materials other than wood.
HEMA band saws are shipped from Baden-Württemberg around the world, with roughly 90 % being exported. Turnover in 2022 stood at roughly 7.5 million euros. Like WINTERSTEIGER, HEMA is also a specialist and a technology and quality leader in a niche sector.
