As a B2B solution provider offering innovative products and services, WINTERSTEIGER has established a leading global position in technically sophisticated niche markets. The leading Innviertel-based business is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a healthy increase in revenue and record results.

“The coronavirus blip is behind us and we are now more successful than ever! In the past year, we have increased our turnover by a third to 223 million euros and recorded EBITDA of over 30 million euros,” says a delighted Dr. Florestan von Boxberg, CEO, reflecting on an extremely successful 2022. “Despite all the political and economic crises, we have succeeded in significantly expanding our market position in all four divisions – and that is all thanks to the brilliant innovation and hard work of our colleagues, with almost 1,200 dedicated employees around the world. We are also delighted to have welcomed more than 100 new employees to the team,” says Harold Kostka, CFO.

“In Division SPORTS, we continued to invest in new digital products during the pandemic and retained all our staff – and we were rewarded for this by our customers in 2022,” says Daniel Steininger, General Manager of WINTERSTEIGER SPORTS. The biggest division in the Group recorded a turnover of 93 million euros and growth of 43 % in the past year. The North American market in particular performed extremely well and accounts for 34 million euros of the turnover in Division SPORTS. The top seller is the fully automated ski servicing system Jupiter, which offers a host of innovative features, such as all-new edge grinding technology and digital ski recognition.

The mobile WINTERSTEIGER laboratories in the form of combines and seeders for the field research equipment market were in high global demand last year. Division SEEDMECH recorded growth of 18 % with a turnover of 52 million euros. “We are accelerating global seed development in order to support sustainable agriculture,” explains Christopher Schiehauer, General Manager of WINTERSTEIGER SEEDMECH. He emphasizes that the continuous development of the business model in terms of digitalization and automation, and the expansion of after sales services will deliver greater customer benefits and is helping the division to expand its leading market position in more and more key markets. For example, a large part of SEEDMECH’s growth in the past year came from North and South America.

“At 54 million euros, Division WOODTECH overtook SEEDMECH in the internal growth competition in 2022,” says Andreas Doubrava, General Manager of WINTERSTEIGER WOODTECH. He puts this figure into context, however, explaining that half of the 16 % growth is the result of the acquisition of German company HEERMANN Maschinenbau GmbH. Thanks to a number of strategic acquisitions in recent years, WOODTECH has now outgrown the niche parquet industry in the wood segment. The division plans to continue its strategy of inorganic growth. Subsidiary VAP-WINTERSTEIGER in Mettmach is a highly sought-after partner for automation and plant engineering, both for customers worldwide and for colleagues within the Group seeking to automate their products.

“With two years of growth and – most notably – strong profits running into the millions, METALS has proven that the tough cuts made as part of the restructuring measures in 2020 were the right thing to do,” says Dr. Hans-Peter Laubscher, CEO of German company KOHLER Maschinenbau GmbH and Head of Division METALS. METALS develops and produces machines for the leveling technology sector. The division now sells just under a third of its volume (turnover in 2022 of 24 million euros, growth of 16 %) via the WINTERSTEIGER organizations in America and Asia.

In 2022, WINTERSTEIGER laid the foundation that will enable the Group to successfully move forward into the future as a holding organization. “Alongside the four market divisions, Division OPERATIONS with sites in Austria and Germany will form the Group’s main engine room and be responsible for industrializing the key mechanical engineering products,” explains Helmut Heftberger, General Manager of WINTERSTEIGER OPERATIONS.

CFO Kostka adds: “WINTERSTEIGER Holding AG will ensure that we keep a firm focus on finance, IT, HR, legal, marketing, and M&A and are constantly moving forward in these areas so that we don’t stray from our ambitious growth trajectory.” WINTERSTEIGER is aiming to double Group turnover every five years – largely organically, but also by making further acquisitions. Consistently strong incoming orders across all divisions are providing the momentum required to successfully continue on this growth course.

WINTERSTEIGER is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023 and is welcoming guests to an open day at the Group’s headquarters in Ried im Innkreis, Austria, on Sunday, April 30, 2023 for drinks, a tour of production, product demonstrations, games, competitions, and much more.
