Episode 8: Beer


In every sip of beer there is also a sip of WINTERSTEIGER! And it's all about the malting barley - a very important component of beer, along with the hops. It is added to the beer as malt and determines the color, taste and foam consistency. The brewmaster calls the malting barley the "body" and the hops the "soul" of the beer.


To ensure that malting barley is healthy and resistant, its seed must be continuously adapted to climate changes. This is where WINTERSTEIGER seeders and harvesters come into play, allowing seed breeders to develop qualities such as greater resistance to drought.


Malting barley is a 2-row spring barley. It is grown in March and harvested in August. Its grains are nicely bulbous compared to the 4-row feed barley and have a lower protein content of max. 11.5% – more protein would be bad for the foam. The malting barley therefore gets less fertilizer than the feed barley. Around 15 different malting barley varieties are bred in breeding facilities in Central Europe, and these are processed into malt. The malt blend determines whether the beer is dark or light, whether the foam is fine-pored or coarse-pored, and how it tastes: The brewmaster aims for a wholehearted beer with unique character – cheers!
