Sterex plasma technology: The best solution for hygienically clean clothing and equipment
Modern drying devices use various technologies to remove germs and bacteria from clothing and neutralize odors. But what distinguishes these technologies and which one is the right choice for your application?
Overview: The most common technologies for hygienic drying
The three most common technologies are UV-C light, ozone, and non-thermal plasma. They use different processes, and their respective advantages and disadvantages should be taken into account when selecting the right drying device.
UV-C light
UV-C light inactivates germs via photochemical processes in DNA/RNA. However, UV-C requires direct irradiation to be effective: shadows, folds, and concealed areas can significantly reduce its efficiency. Layers of fabric with different surfaces and, of course, the inside of clothing are particularly susceptible to such “shadow zones” where germs cannot be reached. At the same time, the use of UV-C requires clear protection standards for users and the environment.
Ozone
The effect of ozone is based on its high oxidizing power to destroy microorganisms and break down odor molecules. The method is fundamentally effective, but it uses a reactive gas that must be strictly controlled, safely decomposed, and spatially shielded. Strict maximum values must be observed at all times, especially with regard to occupational safety: These are currently a maximum daily average of 0.1 ppm and a short-term value of 0.2 ppm. If the ozone concentration is not continuously monitored or if the protective measures fail, this can pose a health risk to employees. In addition, the strong oxidizing effect of ozone can attack or weaken sensitive materials.
Plasma technology
In the non-thermal plasma (ionized air) process, the air flowing through the drying cabinet is electrically charged. The positive and negative air ions destroy the surface of germs, killing them. Since most odors are caused by bacteria, this process also reduces odors. Without aggressive chemicals or high-energy radiation, clothing and equipment are hygienically treated and freed from odors. The process also reaches awkward areas and leaves no residue.
Sterex is the best choice
The differences described between UV-C light, ozone, and plasma paint a clear picture: While ozone and UV-C light can each be effective, they place significantly higher demands on shielding, exposure, and material compatibility. The Sterex plasma technology used by WINTERSTEIGER Dry & Protect combines hygienic effectiveness with operational safety, material protection, and seamless integration into the drying process. Clothing and personal protective equipment are dried, disinfected, and deodorized in a single step – without additional risks or waiting times. This makes Sterex the most thorough and safest choice for anyone who wants to combine reliable hygiene, easy handling, and long-term textile preservation in one system.
Advantages of Sterex plasma technology
Effectiveness proven by studies
Harmless to health and the environment
Application runs during the drying process
Suitable for all types of textiles and PPE
Effectively neutralizes even deep-seated odors
No waiting times or post-treatment necessary
Sterex plasma technology in WINTERSTEIGER drying devices
Our drying cabinets and drying panels are designed to make optimal use of the advantages of Sterex plasma technology. The technology is fully integrated into the drying process and ensures that clothing and equipment are gently dried, hygienically treated, and reliably deodorized in a single step. This guarantees an efficient, safe, and practical process that is particularly impressive in demanding areas of application such as firefighting, rescue services, industry, and municipal operations.
